What types of punishments did they use?

Owners could do whatever they wanted with their slaves.The methods of punishments in the plantations often this included inflicting harsh punishments this includes whips,muzzles,paddle,neck harness and chains. If slaves were bad e.g. tried to run away,attacked the owners or super visors,stopped working or some times even killed other slaves they were killed by being hanged or sent to the guillotine.
